1 〔二つの動作･状態の繰り返しを表す〕

●…たり…たり now doing now doing; now…and then…; with…and (with)…; sometimes…, sometimes…; …and…by turns [in turn, alternately]

・立ったりすわったりする stand (up) and sit (down) by turns [in turn, alternately]

・温度が上がったり下がったり with the temperature rising and falling

・降ったりやんだり raining on and off

・泣いたり笑ったりする now weep, now laugh; weep and laugh by turns [alternately]

・行ったり来たりする come and go; travel to and fro; ply 《between…》

・部屋の中を行ったり来たりする walk up and down the room; pace the room.

●彼の話を聞いているうちに彼女は赤くなったり青くなったりした. As she listened to him she went from blushing to turning pale (with fright).

●…たり…たり doing and doing (and so on).

●服を買ったり旅行へ行ったりしてお金を使った. He spent the money buying clothes, traveling and other things like that.

・政略を用いたり暴力を用いたりして目的を遂げた. They accomplished their aims by (using) political stratagems [tactics, maneuvering] and (using) brute force.

・本を読んだり散歩したりしてその日を過ごした. I passed the day reading and going for a walk (and so on).

3 〔例示して同類を暗示する〕.

●彼女をだましたりしたら承知しないからね. If you deceive her or anything, I'll get you for it.

・一人でいるよりは友だちと会っておしゃべりしたりするほうが心理的にはるかによい. It is of greater psychological benefit to meet with friends and talk with them and the like than to be by oneself.
